Aircon in MidlandSparky for the Circuit, ARCtick Partner for the Install
Split-system aircon is a two-trade job. Electrical (EC 9715) plus refrigerant (ARCtick licence). I handle the electrical side direct, ARCtick partner handles the refrigerant, we coordinate it as one quote.
How a split-system install splits
The electrical side
Dedicated circuit from your board to the aircon location, isolator switch, breaker, switchboard upgrade if your old board can't carry the new load — that's me. EC 9715, sparky work, done direct.
The aircon install
Mounting the indoor and outdoor units, copper line set, refrigerant charge, vacuum, leak test, commissioning — that's ARCtick territory. It's a separate licence (Refrigerant Handling Licence). We work with an ARCtick-licensed install partner.
What I handle directly (EC 9715)
Dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the AC location
Isolator switch (rooftop or wall, code-compliant)
Switchboard upgrade if the old board can't carry the new AC load
AC load assessment for older homes — does the existing supply cope?
Fault finding when an aircon trips or stops getting power
Multiple-unit installs (multi-room, multi-system)
What our ARCtick partner handles
Indoor and outdoor unit mounting
Copper line set and insulation
Refrigerant charge, vacuum, leak test
Commissioning and return-to-service
Manufacturer warranty registration
Common jobs east of the river
Helena Valley acreage
Ducted reverse-cycle install across a four-bedroom acreage home. I did the dedicated three-phase circuit and the switchboard upgrade. ARCtick partner did the unit install.
Midland 1970s brick
Couldn't fit a 7kW split system on the existing single-phase board. Upgraded to three-phase and split system in two days.
Mundaring
Replacement of a 15-year-old window box with a modern split. Old circuit needed updating to current code first.
Stoneville hills cottage
Multi-head split system for three rooms off one outdoor unit. Single dedicated circuit from the board, three indoor heads.
What to SMS
Photo of your switchboard (door open), photo of where you want the indoor unit, photo of the proposed outdoor unit location. We'll work out the circuit, isolator placement, board capacity and unit selection from there.
FAQs
Why two trades for a split system?
Because Australian law splits the work between an electrician (240V supply, circuit, isolator, board) and an ARCtick-licensed technician (refrigerant lines, gas charge, commissioning). It's two separate licences to keep both sides safe. Doing it as one coordinated job means you don't have to find both yourself.
My existing aircon trips every hot day — power problem or unit problem?
Could be either. Most often it's the unit drawing more current than the circuit was sized for, or the breaker is undersized, or the board itself is at capacity. Worth me having a look at the electrical side before you call the AC bloke.
Can you do ducted reverse-cycle?
Yes — same partner setup. I do the dedicated circuit (often three-phase), switchboard upgrade if needed, isolator and condenser circuit. ARCtick partner does the indoor coil install, ducting and refrigerant work.
